Internet Protocol over WDM

This entry was posted on March 29, 2005 and is filed under Technology.

The last few years have seen a growing interest in WDM for optical networks in order to increase capacity and overcome the electronic bottleneck. Alongside the improvement in WDM components there has been a continuing development of WDMA networks. It is expected that the recent explosion in Internet traffic imply a paradigm shift from a voice network to a data centric network. The first and most important requirement of future transport networks is the huge bandwidth transport capability, which enables the paradigm shift. IP over WDM is another concept aimed towards achieving that goal. The ISO-RM model and the SONET- SDH based technologies have a lot of overhead which can be eliminated and conventional IP packets can be transmitted along WDM networks as independent entities. This study tries to focus on the key issues facing IP over WDM networks and gives an overview of technologies that are already under implementation. Obviously the reason for inspecting this technology is not just because it is easy, but because it brings the overall cost down to a significant level. The middle layer transport entities like routers, bridges, hubs etc are all eliminated and electronic processing is discarded except at the terminal nodes. The cost reduction is the main motivating factor to investigate this upcoming technology.
